Linus Pauling won two Nobel Prizes -- a Chemistry Prize for his studies of chemical bonding and for elucidating the structures of proteins, and a Peace Prize for his campaign against nuclear testing. Shown on display is a copy of Pauling's The Architecture of Molecules which was illustrated by artist Roger Hayward. Pauling stated in the preface: "The examples of molecular architecture have been selected to give you an idea of the great variety of ways in which atoms can interact with one another, and to emphasize the significance of molecular structure to life." The copy on display shows the structure of silk, which adopts the "beta-sheet" structure first proposed by Pauling.
